Droughts are becoming more frequent and more intense, and the Mediterranean is particularly vulnerable to climate change.
Last August, in light of the drought that affected several areas of Europe during the summer, Spanish national television (TVE) featured the opinion of Manuel Pulido-Velázquez, Director of the UPV-GVA Chair on Climate Change and researcher at IIAMA.
The interview is in Spanish, an English recap of the key points outlighted is available below:
“Climate change is increasing both the probability and the intensity of droughts in the Mediterranean and across much of central and western Europe.”
“We cannot say that every summer will be like this, but we can say that these types of situations will become more frequent. What we consider exceptional today may no longer be exceptional in the climate of the future.”
“The Mediterranean is one of the climate change hotspots. Rising sea temperatures and an atmosphere with higher moisture content can contribute to extreme weather events, such as DANA episodes.”
“When it comes to climate change, we have three options: mitigation, adaptation, and suffering. The more mitigation and adaptation we are able to develop, the less suffering there will be.”
