Understanding transformational adaptation

A shared vision across EU projects, including TRANSCEND, is now available.

The adoption of transformational adaptation policies (TAPs) to water scarcity in seven living labs across the globe is the core objective of the TRANSCEND project.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change defines transformational adaptation as “actions aiming at adapting to climate change resulting in significant changes in structure or function that go beyond adjusting existing practices” (IPCC, AR 6).

The importance of this approach is widely acknowledged in literature, though, in practice, it is not yet widely applied.

This policy brief explores the complexity of transformational adaptation and the barriers to its implementation, while providing practical recommendations for decision-makers and an overview of best practices around the world.
